What stops you from taking the next step?

Seriously folks. There are boatloads of opportunities out there!
Every day the week we are challenged by making choices. Often, the bigger choices are seen as too disruptive, and most of us don’t like to get uncomfortable.
Have you ever met somebody you who had the same haircut for 30 years? Is it because it suits them, or is it because they are comfortable with a style – regardless of how far it may be out of fashion? (My style choice is limited to Number 1 or Number 2!)

The same applies to other decisions in life. Sometimes the pull of what is “normal” restrictions from the movement that we could be making. You may be able to find excuses like your parents, friends, children, or social network being disrupted.

It might not be as easy as waiting a month for a bad haircut to grow out, but most things in life are manageable.

STEP 1: IS IT WORTH IT?

A simple test of the advantages versus the disadvantages of a choice is the first step. You could also add in a third column of “Is There Any Cost to Repair It?” if you are really unsure.
Generally speaking, being logical about the process gives you some clarity. Understanding what your own personal values and goals are is critical, and it is always a great idea to align yourself so that any choice you make leads a step closer to where you want to be.
In a majority of cases when I deal with clients, the changes and challenges that they are confronted with a usually a sign of a need to step forward or evolve, and an opportunity for growth.

STEP 2: GET CRYSTAL CLEAR

Becoming clear about what you are aiming for is a sure sign that you will succeed. I have seen people aim for nothing, and they achieve that target! I have also had clients become crystal clear in precisely what they are aiming for, and they also achieve. You may as well aim for something that you want rather than nothing, or more of the same (which is the reason why you are confronted with the possibility of change in the first place!)

STEP 3: COMMIT

When you have a crystal clear vision of where you want to aim you have to be committed. If you want to change something, you have to do something different. Einstein said it all when he made the observation that using the same mindset that got you into a situation is not going to help you get out of it.

STEP 4: TAKE ACTION

Taking action for some people can be a bit scary. You don’t have to jump off the edge of the rollercoaster or out of a plane to prove that you can take action.
If you’re not used to it sometimes just taking a single step can be invigorating. Planning and committing to making a telephone call can be one step. Walking to the end of the street back could be a few steps taken towards a health goal.
On the other hand, if there is a habit that you wish to break, it could be a bit like tearing off a Band-Aid. You can do it bit by bit with lots of little bits of pain, or remove it with one single yank!

Successful change ALWAYS starts with making a choice.
